Director of Development, NY Tri-State Region

The American Committee seeks a dynamic and savvy fundraiser with a track record of success in major gifts fundraising at the $100,000+ level.  The Director of Development, NY Tri-State will develop, engage, and solicit a portfolio of prospective donors capable of gifts of $100,000 to $2 million, or more. As a frontline gift officer, this position is responsible for significant travel throughout the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT, Long Island).

 

Responsibilities include managing an assigned portfolio of prospective donors assessing, engaging, and inspiring giving to the various science and research priorities of WIS. The Director of Development will work independently to arrange in-person meetings including follow up, working collaboratively and creatively with other staff and team members, Weizmann faculty and volunteers, to plan and implement thoughtful engagement, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. The selected candidate will be expected to fully understand and contribute to ACWIS’ strategic plan, priorities, programs, and key financial measures in order to best represent the Institute’s interests.

 

Reporting to the Executive Director, NY Tri-State Region, the Director of Development will focus primarily on developing and broadening the major gifts pool, soliciting leadership gifts, and strengthening donor stewardship. The potential candidate will join a team of frontline fundraising professionals.

 

Essential Functions:
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of approximately 65-80 +/- major gift prospects.
  • Develop strategies and approaches to generate higher levels of giving; conduct approximately 120+ visits/per year (10 to 12 visits per month).
  • Create and implement a comprehensive stewardship plan with monthly and annual goals.
  • Identify and qualify new prospects by working independently and with colleagues.
  • Track progress against goals by developing and maintaining regular Moves Management reports.
  • Assist in strategizing and implementing donor cultivation and recognition events including intimate lectures connecting donors with scientists from the Institute.
  • Attend regular prospect management meetings with broader fundraising team to review and qualify prospects within the ACWIS donor universe.
  • Advance the success of the major gifts program through strategic leadership and management of campaign initiatives along all stages of the donor engagement process.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in major gifts cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship and/or campaigns, preferably in a university setting.
  • Ability to analyze and apply data to effectively manage a portfolio.
  • The candidate must be visionary and possess strategic planning abilities to be applied toward developing the infrastructure of an innovative fundraising program and the leadership necessary to ensure its successful implementation.
  • The successful candidate will have superior communication skills to express, orally and in writing, the mission, vision and goals of the Institute with clarity, passion, and persuasion.
  • Candidates must be committed to implementing best practices, demonstrate an adherence to the highest standards of ethical practices, and possess superb communication skills,
  • Understanding of higher education issues, optimism, creativity, diligence, and a commitment to collaboration.
  • Must be willing and able to work some evenings and weekends along with the ability to travel by subway, car or airplane including overnight travel.
  • Familiarity with Planned Giving is preferred. 
  • Must have an appreciation for the mission of the Weizmann Institute of Science.

 

Computer Skills Required:
  • Experience and proficiency with Raiser’s Edge (NXT) or another CRM tool.
  • Experience with wealth screen tools and resources such as LexisNexis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
