A 2019 Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway High School graduate experienced what aspiring scientists might call the experience of a lifetime this past summer. Woodmere resident Miriam Kopyto was chosen by the world renowned Weizmann Institute of Science to take part, alongside 55 other teenagers from across the world, in the institution’s annual Dr. Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute in Rehovot, Israel.

Eliana had a rarefied summer working in the Boris Rybtchinski Lab in the Department of Organic Chemistry at Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. “My research is in the ‘sustainable nanomaterials’ portion of what the lab does. We combine carbon nanotubes with organic dye nanocrystals to produce a hybrid nanocomposite in the form of a thin film that is electrically conductive and mechanically robust.” These films can be deposited on many surfaces and used as electrodes in energy storage devices. “I worked on a method which recycles the excess dye and solvent in order to make it more environmentally friendly when taken to industrial manufacturing.”

While many of his peers spent the summer gearing up for college, Tony Pan of Grosse Pointe Farms traveled to Israel to work in a lab at one of the world’s foremost scientific research institutions. Thanks to a scholarship from the Borman family of Bloomfield Hills, Pan was one of 19 American teens participating in the 50th annual Dr. Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, a global leader in scientific disciplines, from cancer to alternative energy to space exploration.
