Beginner's Luck: The Power of Stem Cells

Young stem cells, like young people, have unlimited choices and options before them. They can become anything – businessperson, farmer, heart cell, skin cell. But then stem cells make the “big decision” to follow their fate: instructions kick in, and the young cell goes to make up the part of the body it is assigned to. However, stem cell researchers may be able to use the unlimited potential of the earliest stem cells and direct the cells to become something else: to produce insulin for diabetics, for example.

Support from longtime Weizmann Institute philanthropists Helen and Martin Kimmel helps fund stem cell research.
