In this videoconference, Prof. Ruth Arnon explains the power – and weaknesses – of vaccines, including their potential for helping stop the COVID-19 outbreak and future pandemics.

She also presents the research behind her new universal flu vaccine. Being brought to market by BiondVax and in the final phase of clinical trials, the vaccine will protect people from many strains of influenza, for many years, with a single dose. This avoids the traditional challenges of developing an annual flu vaccine, for which scientists must predict the strain(s) for the coming flu season and start manufacturing the vaccine several months in advance in order to have sufficient quantity. If a different strain emerges than was predicted, the vaccine becomes basically useless. Prof. Arnon’s version is constructed differently, and can be quickly, easily, and efficiently modified to take on different strains. It is proving highly successful in trials.
