May 08, 2019... Meet physicist Prof. Erez Berg, the 2019 Physical Sciences & Engineering Laureate of the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists. Prof. Berg has conducted influential studies to gain insights into quantum materials—materials whose electronic properties cannot be characterized by traditional physics. His research holds major promise for devising new ways of storing and manipulating quantum information, with implications for a new computing age, as well as next-generation electronics, superconducting power lines, and MRI technologies. The Blavatnik Awards, presented by The Blavatnik Family Foundation, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (IASH), recognize early-career scientists and engineers in Israel for both their extraordinary achievements and promise for future discoveries. Of the three 2019 laureates, two were from the Weizmann Institute; the other Weizmann winner was Dr. Michal Rivlin of the Department of Neurobiology. Sep 09, 2015... At 29, Eran Hodis has achieved what many scientists dream of accomplishing in a lifetime: He discovered two of the most common genetic mutations in all of cancer. His work has global implications and could, in the future, lead to more effective cancer therapies. This year, in recognition of his scientific achievements, Hodis was named to Forbes’s prestigious “30 under 30” list.
“Without a doubt, my Weizmann training made that possible,” said Hodis, who earned his master’s in bioinformatics at Weizmann’s Feinberg Graduate School.

Jerusalem — She’s young, smart and aims to help treat life-threatening diseases. Naama Geva-Zatorsky, 34, is among a growing number of Israeli women scientists who are gaining recognition for their contributions to scientific research.
The Weizmann Institute biologist was in Paris last month to accept the International UNESCO L’Oreal Prize for Women in Science. Dubbed “Europe’s top young researcher” by the prize committee, she received a two-year, $40,000 fellowship for her postdoctoral work at Harvard University.

Mar 02, 2015... Manot Cave cranium
A partial human skull unearthed in 2008 in northern Israel may hold some clues as to when and where humans and Neanderthals might have interbred. The key to addressing this, as well as other important issues, is precisely determining the age of the skull. A combination of dating methods, one of them performed by Dr. Elisabetta Boaretto, head of the Weizmann Institute’s D-REAMS (DANGOOR Research Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) laboratory, has made it possible to define the period of time that the cave was occupied and, thus, the skull’s age. The combined dating provides evidence that Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis could have lived side by side in the area.

Apr 02, 2015... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—April 2, 2015—An analysis of the average success rates for all European Research Council (ERC) grants awarded during the 7th Framework Programme (FP7), 2007 – 2013, gave the Weizmann Institute of Science the top score: it has had 35% of its ERC grant proposals approved, while in comparison, the Israeli average is 18%, and the success rate of all ERC proposals is around 10%. And in absolute numbers of grants – a metric that puts the Institute in direct competition with much larger institutions – the Weizmann Institute was number six, with a total of 82 grants worth nearly €150 million (more than $165 million).

Mar 28, 2019... LOS ANGELES (March 28, 2019) —XPRIZE, the global leader in designing and operating world-changing incentive competitions, announces that it will offer a $1 million Moonshot Award in recognition of an XPRIZE team demonstrating the achievement of a “moonshot” technological feat outside the parameters or timeframe of an XPRIZE competition.
The Award is inspired by SpaceIL, a former Google Lunar XPRIZE team, whose mission to become the first private, non-government entity to land on the surface of the Moon is underway, with an anticipated landing on April 11, 2019. A successful lunar landing will result in SpaceIL receiving the inaugural Moonshot Award from XPRIZE.

The team that represented Israel at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Santa Marta, Colombia, has won six medals – one gold, three silver, and two bronze. The Israeli team was ranked 13th among 97 participating countries.
Team members are “graduates” of national Olympiads – the Joseph Gillis National Math Olympiad for high school and the Zuta Math Olympiad for junior high school students – held at the Davidson Institute of Science Education, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science. The team took part in a two-week training camp in early June, as well as training sessions held over the three months that preceded the competition. They were coached by Lev Radzivilovsky, together with Prof. Dmitry Novikov of the Weizmann Institute’s Department of Mathematics.
