Weizmann Institute of Science Ranked in Top 25

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/news-releases/weizmann-institute-of-science-ranked-in-top-25/

Jun 04, 2019... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—June 4, 2019— The Weizmann Institute of Science has been ranked among the top 25 research institutes/universities in the world in two main categories by U-Multirank, 2019. This organization named the Institute a Global Top 25 performer in two areas: Top-Cited Publications and Patents Awarded.
This ranking, an initiative of the European Commission since 2014, uses all the information available about hundreds of institutes worldwide and analyses it according to numerous variables to show which leads in five main categories. Each category is assessed independently, according to parameters unique to that category, and they are weighted so as to add a qualitative – rather than just quantitative – dimension to the ranking. The ranking is intended to promote transparency and to aid students in applying to universities for studies and research.

Feb 02, 2017... Dr. Michael Yartsev runs the NeuroBat Lab at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. With the support of an ISEF doctoral fellowship, he completed his PhD in 2012 at the Weizmann Institute, studying under the guidance of Prof. Nachum Ulanovsky.
Dr. Michael Yartsev
Dr. Yartsev is fascinated with the neurobiological mechanism by which bats acquire their vocalizations, targeting a core process – shared with humans – called “vocal learning.” ISEF supported Dr. Yartsev throughout his higher education, from his BSc and MSc at Ben-Gurion University to his PhD at Weizmann to his postdoctoral research at the Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University, for which he received an ISEF International Fellowship. The ISEF scholarships helped Dr. Yartsev find his calling. “My time at the Weizmann Institute was transformative to my career,” he says, “as it exposed me to the extraordinary model system: the bat.”

Nov 04, 2007... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—November 4, 2007—In a festive ceremony at the Weizmann Institute of Science, 11 young women scientists who completed their Ph.D. studies with honors at several Israeli universities and academic institutions will each receive an award of about $20,000 a year for two years. These awards, which will help them conduct postdoctoral studies at leading universities abroad, are being granted within the framework of the new Weizmann Institute Women in Science Program aimed at assisting highly talented young women to work toward a career in the natural or exact sciences. The goal of the program is to begin closing the gap between male and female scientists in the highest ranks of academia.

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/in-the-news/singer-einat-sarouf-leads-a-hora-at-weizmann-institute-gala/

Apr 22, 2013... There was some heavy duty mingling between super scientists and mere mortals at the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Gala held at The Pierre on April 17. Shmoozers included Sam Waksal, Edith Everett and Sir James Wolfensohn. Sinuous Israeli singer Einat Sarouf launched the evening with her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and Hatikvah.
Honored were Sara and Professor Michael Sela, a former president of the Weizmann Institute (1975-1985). Currently the incumbent of the W. Garfield Weston Professorial Chair of Immunology, Prof. Sela — still active in the lab though in his 80s — joshed: “I’ve always said that my motto was work hard and play hard. But I’ve never had enough time to play. So it’s mainly work, but such a pleasant, satisfactory work.”

Mar 08, 2008... When she mounted the podium of the sumptuous hall at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris to receive her $100,000 prize on Thursday, Weizmann Institute of Science Prof. Ada Yonath could justifiably tell herself: “You have reached your scientific target!”
Ironically, one of Israel’s most distinguished scientists - male or female - was for decades treated “like the village fool” by Israeli and foreign colleagues who had doubts about her findings in the rather obscure and complex field of ribosomal crystallography
