Jun 05, 2009... Bacteria are not dumb. Israeli researchers have proven that these pathogens can anticipate a future event and prepare for it. The discovery - just published in the prestigious journal Nature - is not merely a curiosity. The scientists believe that if bacteria gain the genetic ability to prepare themselves for the next step in a process, the conditioned response could be used for fermenting plant materials and producing more efficient biofuels.

Prof. Uri Alon of the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science foresees a future in which medicine is predictive, personalized, accurate, and rational. In fact, he has already begun to set the groundwork for this transformation by identifying common recurring patterns in the way proteins interact, and developing a novel method for essentially spying on living cells as they undergo chemotherapy.

Scientists know that circadian rhythms affect metabolism, but many of the ways in which the timing of eating can influence health are still unknown. Now, researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and the Sanford-Burnam Medical Resarch Institute in Florida have shown in mice that the timing of meals affects the levels of triglycerides in the liver. The work was published last week (February 5) in Cell Metabolism.

Christoph Thaiss from the Weizmann Institute of Science has discovered that the communities of microbes in out guts vary on a daily cycle. Some species rise to the fore during daylight hours and recede into the background at night, while others show the opposite pattern.

These four-chambered, fist-sized, muscular powerhouses pump up to 2,000 gallons of blood a day! However, while they never tire and are astonishingly resilient, they are susceptible to a number of illnesses, which can be caused by a number of things: congenital issues, genetics, obesity, diabetes, inactivity, and more. In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death for female, male, black, white, and Latino Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and is responsible for one in every four deaths in the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control’s straightforward statement of that fact belies the complex truth: heart problems are both common and varied, affect people of all ages, and strike equally across gender and economic borders. And according to the American Heart Association, more than 80 million Americans have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure. Factors such as obesity, diabetes, and inactivity greatly contribute to heart and cardiovascular disease, although congenital and genetic issues also come into play.

Twenty-six science teachers have completed advanced studies in the Rothschild-Weizmann Program for Excellence in Science Teaching and will be awarded MSc degrees in science teaching from the Feinberg Graduate School of the Weizmann Institute of Science. This unique program, the first of its kind in Israel, is designed for high-school science teachers. In the upcoming year, about 100 will be enrolled in the two-year program.

Heidelberg, 8 June 2017 – Maya Schuldiner from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel is the recipient of the 2017 EMBO Gold Medal. She receives the award for significantly advancing the understanding of protein synthesis, trafficking and quality control.
The EMBO Gold Medal is awarded annually and recognizes outstanding contributions to the life sciences in Europe by young independent group leaders.

In a surprise finding that was recently published in Nature Communications, Weizmann Institute of Science researchers showed that nighttime is the right time for cancer to grow and spread in the body. Their findings suggest that administering certain treatments in time with the body’s day-night cycle could boost their efficiency.
