Inside the Mission to Perform Bone-Marrow Transplants on Survivors of the Chernobyl Disaster
Inside the Mission to Perform Bone-Marrow Transplants on Survivors of the Chernobyl Disaster

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/in-the-news/inside-the-mission-to-perform-bone-marrow-transplants-on-survivors-of-the-chernobyl-disaster/

Apr 27, 2020... On May 2, 1986, while visiting my long-term colleague and friend Richard O’Reilly, the head of bone marrow transplantation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, I received a strange phone call. It was from Richard Champlin, who worked at the Bone Marrow Transplant Center at UCLA. He tended to speak very fast, so it took me some time to understand from his over-excited voice that he was about to leave the next day for Moscow.

How the Weizmann Institute is Fighting Blood Cancer
How the Weizmann Institute is Fighting Blood Cancer

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/feature-stories/how-the-weizmann-institute-is-fighting-blood-cancer/

Sep 04, 2020... Blood cancers are far too common, comprising almost 10% of new cancer diagnoses each year in the U.S. Almost every 10 minutes, an American succumbs to a blood cancer. Unfortunately, many of these are children.
That's why the Weizmann Institute of Science’s researchers are conducting innovative studies and taking novel approaches to blood cancers. September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, and we’d like to share with you some of Weizmann’s current investigations.

Settled at Birth: Blood Vessels Remember Their Origins
Settled at Birth: Blood Vessels Remember Their Origins

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/news-releases/settled-at-birth-blood-vessels-remember-their-origins/

May 25, 2022... REHOVOT, ISRAEL – May 25 2022 – Our family origins tend to shape our future in many ways. A Weizmann Institute of Science study, published today in Nature, found that the same holds true for blood vessels. The researchers discovered blood vessels forming from unexpected progenitors and went on to show that this unusual origin determines the vessels’ future function.
“We found that blood vessels must derive from the right source in order to function properly – it’s as if they remember where they came from,” says team leader Prof. Karina Yaniv.

Sweetness That Comes at a Price: Sugar Substitutes May Affect the Human Body in Unanticipated Ways

Aug 19, 2022... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—August 19, 2022—Non-nutritive sweeteners – also known as sugar substitutes or artificial sweeteners – are supposed to deliver all the sweetness of sugar without the calories. But a controlled trial conducted by Weizmann Institute of Science researchers, published today in Cell, suggests that contrary to previous belief, such sweeteners are not inert: They do have an effect on the human body. In fact, some can alter human consumers’ microbiomes – the trillions of microbes that live in our gut – in a way that can change a person’s blood sugar levels. And the effects these sweeteners produce vary greatly among different people.

Putting Liquid Biopsies on Solid Ground: Cancer Diagnosis from a Milliliter of Blood

Sep 08, 2022... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—September 8, 2022—Blood tests – simple, noninvasive and economically feasible – promise to become the next major milestone in cancer diagnosis. However, most of these tests, dubbed liquid biopsies, are currently not reliable enough for widespread use. A new, multiparameter approach developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science may lead to a blood test that will diagnose cancer with unprecedented accuracy. This research is being published today in Nature Biotechnology.
