REHOVOT, ISRAEL—May 31, 2009—Prof. Katzir passed away yesterday, Saturday, May 30, 2009, at his home in the Weizmann Institute of Science. He was 93.
Professor Ephraim Katzir, fourth President of Israel and one of the founding faculty members of the Weizmann Institute of Science, was born in Kiev, the Ukraine, in 1916. His parents, Yehuda and Tsila Katchalski, brought him to British-ruled Palestine in 1922. Following high school in Jerusalem, he enrolled in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem where he studied botany, zoology and bacteriology before finally concentrating on biochemistry and organic chemistry. In 1941, he completed his Ph.D. thesis on simple synthetic polymers of amino acids and continued his education at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, Columbia University and Harvard University.

Jewish refugees pack the ship Exodus in 1947 in a futile effort to reach British-controlled Palestine.
When most people think of the refugee ship Exodus, the Paul Newman movie and the Leon Uris novel on which it was based come to mind.
What few know is that one of the real heroes behind the real Exodus was a businessman from Brockton, Dewey D. Stone.
Stone’s role in purchasing ships and weapons — under the nose of the FBI — and helping to orchestrate the founding of Israel is the subject of a new documentary, “The Dewey Stone Connection: From Exodus to Independence.”

Woodmere resident and 2016 salutatorian of the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway High School (HAFTR) Justin Lish broadened his scientific horizons during his four weeks in Rehovot, Israel, where he attended the Weizmann Institute of Science’s annual Dr. Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute from July 3 to 28.
Jan 01, 2008... Five thousand people, including many families with children, visited the Weizmann Institute of Science campus recently to take part in "Researchers' Night." Researchers' Night has been an annual event in Europe for a number of years, and two years ago, in the framework of a partnership between the Israeli Ministry of Science and the European Union (EU), Israel adopted the idea. The event is held on the same date across Europe and in various places in Israel.

The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science (ACWIS) and New York University (NYU) recently held a Day of Science on the topic of “Unveiling the Secrets of the Brain: Collaborations in Neuroscience.”
While the topic of neuroscience could be perceived as daunting, the half-day seminar, which featured four prominent scientists, attracted about 150 people to the Helen & Martin Kimmel Center for University Life at NYU. This large turnout is perhaps because, as Prof. Ilan Chet, President of the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS), Israel, indicated in his welcoming remarks, brain research is one of the areas of science that attracts the most interest from the public. We all want to know who we are, and what makes us “us,” both as a species and as individuals.
Oct 22, 2015... The human brain is “limitless” – and yet, sometimes things go wrong. In this video, Prof. Noam Sobel, Dr. Assaf Tal, Prof. Michal Schwartz, Prof. Alon Chen, Dr. Tali Kimchi, Dr. Ofer Yizhar, Prof. Daniel Zajfman, and Prof. Yadin Dudai talk about studying the brain in health and disease, always learning “what it means to be human, what it means to think, what it means to remember.”

People, as Weizmann Institute of Science President Prof. Daniel Zajfman often says, are our greatest natural resource. These are not just words; he is behind a push by the Institute to leverage the power of people—women as well as men.
