Consider a future in which robots work alongside humans to search for disaster survivors and sensors monitor their response to bacterial infections in real time.
A $20 million gift from the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Foundation of Michigan will expand collaboration among researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science, the University of Michigan, and the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology to help enhance quality of life through advancements in robotics and precision health.

Dec 08, 2010... The billions of cells in our bodies have to work together and be in constant communication in order to sense and react to changes in their environment. They receive signals from other cells that tell them, for example, how much they need to grow, when to divide, and when to produce the proteins that carry out many of the tasks in the cell. “For all this to work, you need a specialized compartment in the cell where you can control the quality of every single protein the cell produces, package it correctly, and then send it on to its destination outside of the cell,” says Dr. Maya Schuldiner of the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Department of Molecular Genetics. She studies this specialized compartment, which is a structure known as the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). “I call it the cell’s shipping and packing department,” she says.

The Weizmann Institute is One of Seven “Instruct” Core Centres
Major transformations in biomedical science are on the horizon with the establishment of the world-class Integrated Structural Biology Infrastructure (Instruct) in support of European biomedical research.
The European Strategy Forum of Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) is involved in establishing about 40 such infrastructures, seven of them in biomedical sciences. Instruct is one such biomedical project, whose aim is to provide pan-European user access to state-of-the-art equipment, technologies, and manpower in cellular structural biology. This will allow Europe to maintain a competitive edge and play a leading role in this vital research area.

There seems to be no limit to the number of times children can ask “Why?” as they wonder about the fascinating world around them. Adults who retain this curiosity may be young at heart, but they don’t always have answers when asked to explain these mysteries.

Nov 15, 2017... The Midwest Region hosted a memorable Gala Dinner under the theme of “Breakthrough: Celebrating Discoveries. Shaping Tomorrow.” More than 500 community and industry leaders came together at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park to honor Jeffrey S. Aronin, Chairman and CEO of Paragon Biosciences, LLC. An entrepreneur, innovator and investor, Mr. Aronin received the American Committee’s Weizmann Leadership Award in recognition of his dedication to improving lives through his community and philanthropic endeavors. National and Midwest Regional Board members Dr. Marilyn Perlman and Brian Price once again served as event chairs, and WGN Radio’s Ilyce Glink served as emcee. Watch the full program, which featured a tribute to Mr. Aronin and the announcement of a new career development chair at the Institute.
May 08, 2019... Meet physicist Prof. Erez Berg, the 2019 Physical Sciences & Engineering Laureate of the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists. Prof. Berg has conducted influential studies to gain insights into quantum materials—materials whose electronic properties cannot be characterized by traditional physics. His research holds major promise for devising new ways of storing and manipulating quantum information, with implications for a new computing age, as well as next-generation electronics, superconducting power lines, and MRI technologies. The Blavatnik Awards, presented by The Blavatnik Family Foundation, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (IASH), recognize early-career scientists and engineers in Israel for both their extraordinary achievements and promise for future discoveries. Of the three 2019 laureates, two were from the Weizmann Institute; the other Weizmann winner was Dr. Michal Rivlin of the Department of Neurobiology.
