Nov 30, 2014... Prof. Haim Garty
REHOVOT, ISRAEL—November 30, 2014—Prof. Haim Garty loved to tell people that he grew up in the “backyard of the Weizmann Institute of Science.” Prof. Garty was born in Bulgaria in 1948 and came with his family to Israel in 1950, settling in Rehovot, the Institute’s hometown, and so his childhood memories were colored by Weizmann. In one recollection, “Rehovot schoolchildren played an important role in the life of the Institute. We were often called upon to greet foreign visitors. More than once, we stood on the side of the road leading to the Institute, waving little flags.”

If you look at an upside-down photograph of the fashion model Bar Refaeli, she looks just fine. When the same picture is turned right-side-up, she suddenly seems monstrous, and you realize that within her upright face, it is the eyes and mouth that have been turned upside down. Because our brain tends to recognize people by their eyes and mouth, we know immediately that this is the same person as long as the eyes and mouth are portrayed right-side-up. Even though they werepositioned in the upside-down face, our brains registered an “all-ok.” There’s a life lesson.

Aug 21, 2014... At a TEDx event at the Weizmann Institute, Dr. Maya Schuldiner talks about the many years of training that scientists, doctors, and the like must undergo – in her case, a third of her life – in order to be successful. But there's a dark secret: they are not taught business – how to interview and recruit, how to set up a lab, how to manage staff. This is a problem.
