Turing Award-winning computer scientist Shafi Goldwasser will become the new director of the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at the University of California, Berkeley, on January 1, 2018.
The Simons Institute is the world’s leading venue for collaborative research in theoretical computer science. Established on July 1, 2012, with a grant of $60 million from the Simons Foundation, the institute is housed in Calvin Lab, where leading researchers in theoretical computer science and related fields, as well as the next generation of young scholars, explore deep unsolved problems about the nature and limits of computation.

Memories come and go, but I can promise that I will remember this past month forever. This July, I was one of 80 students from around the world who were part of the 44th Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
I had found out about the program through two of last year’s participants, who I had met at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair several months earlier. It seemed just too good to be true; the International Summer Science Institute combined a serious research opportunity with travel in Israel, the topic of a book I was engrossed in at the time. After anxious months of waiting, I remember the moment I received my acceptance — it was the soft ‘ping’ signaling an email that triggered a cascade of shrieks and euphoric phone calls. I was going to Weizmann.

Jamie and Dr. Shari-Lynn Odzer
Dr. Shari-Lynn Odzer and her husband Ari of Miami have actively supported the Weizmann Institute of Science for many years. Her connection to the Institute began the summer before she entered college, when she spent a month on the Institute’s campus as part of the Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI). More than three decades later, her daughter Jamie followed in her footsteps as an ISSI participant. Here, mother and daughter share the Weizmann experiences that fueled their scientific curiosity—and sparked their deep love of the Institute and of Israel.

Kathy Bates for World Lymphedema Day
“There is no cure for lymphedema,” states the Mayo Clinic. That’s one reason people all over the world are coming together to raise awareness of this condition – including Oscar-winning actor Kathy Bates, who developed it after breast cancer surgery.
Lymphedema is swelling, typically in the arms and legs, and affects as many as 10 million Americans, many of them cancer survivors like Ms. Bates. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, the condition is “most commonly caused by the removal of or damage to your lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment.”

Experiencing the Weizmann Institute’s Clore Garden of Science
Plans are already in high gear for the second annual Science Education Week, which will take place this year from April 3-9. More than 60 events are planned for the special week, and will take place not only on the Weizmann Institute of Science campus and in its area, but all around the country. Guided tours and special activities will be offered in science museums, including the MadaTech in Haifa, the Carasso Science Park in Beer Sheva, the Bloomfield Science Museum in Jerusalem, the Clore Garden of Science at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, and others. Popular science lectures, hands-on activities, and demonstrations will take place around the nation, including in several malls.

Dr. Michael Yartsev runs the NeuroBat Lab at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. With the support of an ISEF doctoral fellowship, he completed his PhD in 2012 at the Weizmann Institute, studying under the guidance of Prof. Nachum Ulanovsky.
Dr. Michael Yartsev
Dr. Yartsev is fascinated with the neurobiological mechanism by which bats acquire their vocalizations, targeting a core process – shared with humans – called “vocal learning.” ISEF supported Dr. Yartsev throughout his higher education, from his BSc and MSc at Ben-Gurion University to his PhD at Weizmann to his postdoctoral research at the Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University, for which he received an ISEF International Fellowship. The ISEF scholarships helped Dr. Yartsev find his calling. “My time at the Weizmann Institute was transformative to my career,” he says, “as it exposed me to the extraordinary model system: the bat.”
