Prof. Nir Orion
Teaching outdoors taps into children's natural learning instincts. But it demands systemic change, says Nir Orion.
During the last decade, there has been growing interest in implementing the Blue Planet educational programme developed at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. It is one of dozens of units my research group has developed under a curriculum titled Thinking Science - Understanding Environment that aims to awaken students' natural learning instinct by making the subject relevant to their personal lives.

Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas speaks at the Black Hat conference Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, in Las Vegas. The annual computer security conference draws thousands of hackers and security professionals to Las Vegas. John Locher/AP
The word “hacker” might conjure thoughts of the Edward Snowden, Ashley Madison or Sony Pictures data breaches.
Generally, hackers are people who illegally break into computers to gain unauthorized access to data.
Nov 04, 2007... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—November 4, 2007—In a festive ceremony at the Weizmann Institute of Science, 11 young women scientists who completed their Ph.D. studies with honors at several Israeli universities and academic institutions will each receive an award of about $20,000 a year for two years. These awards, which will help them conduct postdoctoral studies at leading universities abroad, are being granted within the framework of the new Weizmann Institute Women in Science Program aimed at assisting highly talented young women to work toward a career in the natural or exact sciences. The goal of the program is to begin closing the gap between male and female scientists in the highest ranks of academia.
Oct 29, 2014... Prof. Daniella Goldfarb addresses the ongoing need to have more women scientists in high-level scientific careers – and how the Institute's National Postdoctoral Award Program for Advancing Women in Science is helping make this happen. Also speaking to this issue are (in order of appearance): Prof. Nirit Dudovich, Dr. Michal Rivlin, Dr. Michal Sharon, Prof. Varda Rotter, and Dr. Noam Stern-Ginossar.

So says Nessa Rappaport, Senior Program Officer of the Charles H. Revson Foundation – and the Weizmann Institute of Science couldn’t agree more.
The Revson Foundation’s actions speak as clearly as those words; along with several other valued, generous individuals and organizations, it supports the Weizmann Institute’s National Postdoctoral Award Program for Advancing Women in Science.
2017 marks 10 years since the program was established to help close science’s gender gap; now, as 2016 draws to a close, it is the perfect time to look at the impacts of this remarkable effort.

Dr. Roni Zohar’s video, “Movements as a Door for Learning Physics Concepts – Integrating Embodied Pedagogy in Teaching,” won the Social Science category of Science’s 2018/19 “Dance Your PhD” competition
REHOVOT, ISRAEL—February 18, 2019—Scientists are not generally required to display prowess in modern dance, but Dr. Roni Zohar of the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Department of Science Teaching recently showed her moves in an award-winning science/dance video. Her video placed first in the social sciences category of the “Dance Your PhD” contest held by the prestigious journal Science. The competition, now in its 11th year, selects its winners from entries in which PhD students and those who have received their doctorates describe their PhD subjects through dance. It comprises four categories – biology, physics, chemistry, and social sciences – and the winner are selected by a panel of judges that includes scientists and figures from the arts world.

Ever wanted to know how to fix a broken heart? What a scratch, pneumonia, and soil pollution have in common? Why insects could be the food of the future? Researchers’ Night at the Weizmann Institute of Science is an evening dedicated to science for everyone – to answering any and all questions about science.
Researchers’ Night has been taking place annually at the Weizmann Institute of Science since 2006, as part of the European Union Researchers’ Night event that takes place in hundreds of sites all over Europe. In Israel, it occurs within a nationwide framework of activities at academic research institutes and science museums and is supported by the Israeli Ministry of Science, Technology and Space. Researchers’ Night at the Weizmann Institute is organized by the Davidson Institute of Science Education, the Weizmann Institute’s educational arm.

Aug 21, 2014... In this performance at a TEDx event at the Weizmann Institute, renowned systems biologist Prof. Uri Alon plays and sings an homage – to the tune of Leonard Cohen's ""Suzanne"" – to his friend Mike, a fellow-scientist who didn't let the postdoc Uri give up and quit science. If you've ever had a mentor, someone to whom you owe your career, this one's for you.

THE ART of science: Daniel Zajfman. (photo credit: NIR KEIDAR)
At the tender age of 20, Daniel Zajfman decided to make aliyah on his own. Just 15 years later, he’d been offered professorships at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel’s two premiere institutions for scientific research. At the end of this year, Zajfman will conclude his successful term as president of Rehovot’s Weizmann Institute. For over 12 years, Zajfman has stood at the helm of the institution that has been a symbol of Israel’s excellence throughout the generations. He’s the youngest president in the Institute’s history – and probably one of the most brilliant, too. During his tenure, he doubled Weizmann’s budget, and the Institute has been able to establish its position as one of the top science research institutions in the world. Despite all this, Zajfman is modest, practical, focused and optimistic. Yes, extremely optimistic.
