Founded in 1944, the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science develops philanthropic support for the Weizmann Institute in Israel, and advances its mission of science for the benefit of humanity.
Jul 06, 2010... NEW YORK, NY—July 6, 2010—The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, was ranked second among the top international academic institutions on The Scientist magazine’s 8th annual worldwide survey of “Best Places to Work in Academia.” In both 2005 and 2008, the Weizmann Institute was ranked as the top international academic institution (outside the United States) by survey respondents. For most of his life, Joshua Meier has been the textbook definition of a whiz kid. At four, he received his first computer game – a gift that fascinated him until he realized that the experience it created was “fundamentally limited.” Eager to push beyond those limitations, he opened his first email account when he was five and began programming at the age of eight.
His interests soon expanded to biology. By the time he was a high school junior in Teaneck, New Jersey, he was the head of a biotechnology company, Provita Pharmaceuticals, and had already gained recognition from Google for his stem cell research.

“As a country we don’t fully realize how dangerous this threat is,” says Dr. Ariel Heimann, former director-general of the Davidson Institute of Science Education (the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute), “Everyone keeps talking about the Iranian threat, but it’s not so certain a bomb will ever reach us. What is certain, however, is that without Israeli science, we have no Israeli future.”

Creating a "monster" at the Garden of Science. Photo by Haim Ziv
If you look at an upside-down photograph of the fashion model Bar Refaeli, she looks just fine. When the same picture is turned right-side-up, she suddenly seems monstrous, and you realize that within her upright face, it is the eyes and mouth that have been turned upside down. Because our brain tends to recognize people by their eyes and mouth, we know immediately that this is the same person as long as the eyes and mouth are portrayed right-side-up. Even though they werepositioned in the upside-down face, our brains registered an “all-ok.” There’s a life lesson.
Aug 21, 2014... At a TEDx event at the Weizmann Institute, Dr. Maya Schuldiner talks about the many years of training that scientists, doctors, and the like must undergo – in her case, a third of her life – in order to be successful. But there's a dark secret: they are not taught business – how to interview and recruit, how to set up a lab, how to manage staff. This is a problem.
Aug 21, 2014... Speaking at a TEDx event at the Weizmann Institute, Prof. Ron Milo – while today a plant scientist – talks about the magic of numbers; for example, the only way to truly understand the difference between hot and cold is to know that there's a 10 percent difference in the vibration of select molecules. We can use this numerical intuition to better understand our own biology.

The next head of the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel, says science can "bridge cultural differences" and should "never be a tool of politics."
In December, particle physicist Daniel Zajfman, 47, will become the 10th—and youngest ever—president of the 72-year-old institute. Zajfman, who has been at Weizmann for 15 years, wants to strengthen curiosity-driven research and preserve "complete academic freedom."
Aug 26, 2019... Eliana had a rarefied summer working in the Boris Rybtchinski Lab in the Department of Organic Chemistry at Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. “My research is in the ‘sustainable nanomaterials’ portion of what the lab does. We combine carbon nanotubes with organic dye nanocrystals to produce a hybrid nanocomposite in the form of a thin film that is electrically conductive and mechanically robust.” These films can be deposited on many surfaces and used as electrodes in energy storage devices. “I worked on a method which recycles the excess dye and solvent in order to make it more environmentally friendly when taken to industrial manufacturing.”
Oct 10, 2005... NEW YORK, NY—October 10, 2005—The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and New York University have joined forces to present a special forum on neural science. Four leaders in this dynamic field will explain some of the latest developments in brain research to a select group of invited guests. Titled "Unveiling the Secrets of the Brain," the event will take place at the Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for University Life in New York City on Monday, October 31, from 9:30am to 1:30pm.

In preparation for pitching their business ideas to a panel later in the week, fifty Girl Scouts recently visited Science House to be mentored. We brainstormed on the walls of the Imagination Room and listened as pairs of teams told us about their business ideas developed as part of their program with the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College.
