Prof. Daniel Zajfman

You are absolutely right that there are quite some cultural differences between all these countries. But for me, as far as I’m concerned, this was part of the interest and learning process. One of the unique characteristics of science and scientific research is that while the results are “cultureless” in the sense that it is the same result everywhere, and that the solution of an equation is the same, no matter where you work, the process to get to the solution is very much culture different, and it makes this very interesting, and useful: Different cultures have different approaches to the same problem. If you think about that, it is an amazing tool for problem solving, and this is one of the reason why international collaboration in scientific research is so important. So for me, it was never a problem, but rather part of the solution!

The Weizmann Institute is neither a university nor a research laboratory committed to a single field. How would you define it?
There is no universal way to carry out research, and that’s good. Weizmann is focused on basic research in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics, math and computing and more. Without any immediate concern for practical applications. Our engine is above all curiosity! We try to understand our environment, to solve major scientific questions. And it's this basic work that eventually helps find solutions to some of humanity's major problems. It is somewhat the model of Bell Labs in the USA, from where emerged microwaves, the transistor and the in-depth learning of machines.

Prof. Haim Garty
REHOVOT, ISRAEL—November 30, 2014—Prof. Haim Garty loved to tell people that he grew up in the “backyard of the Weizmann Institute of Science.” Prof. Garty was born in Bulgaria in 1948 and came with his family to Israel in 1950, settling in Rehovot, the Institute’s hometown, and so his childhood memories were colored by Weizmann. In one recollection, “Rehovot schoolchildren played an important role in the life of the Institute. We were often called upon to greet foreign visitors. More than once, we stood on the side of the road leading to the Institute, waving little flags.”
