About Us
Founded in 1944, the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science develops philanthropic support for the Weizmann Institute in Israel, and advances its mission of science for the benefit of humanity.
Oct 29, 2014... In this moving video shown at the 2014 Global Gathering, philanthropic friends of the Weizmann Institute talk about why they give - and why they give to Weizmann. Several donors appear with the scientists they help support, many with relationships going back years.

New York—February 4, 2008—In what has become a family tradition, the Perlman family of Chicago has continued its support of the Weizmann Institute of Science through the establishment of the Joni Perlman-Rosenberg Scholarship Fund for the Support of Cancer Research.
The Scholarship Fund was established by the Perlman Family Foundation. This contribution makes a significant impact upon the Weizmann Institute’s world-renowned cancer research programs. The Perlman family’s generosity will now make $1,250,000 available for cancer research at the Weizmann Institute’s campus in Rehovot, Israel, where scientists are gaining new insights into how cancer develops and spreads, in addition to developing better treatments, preventions, and diagnostics.

Jamie and Dr. Shari-Lynn Odzer
Dr. Shari-Lynn Odzer and her husband Ari of Miami have actively supported the Weizmann Institute of Science for many years. Her connection to the Institute began the summer before she entered college, when she spent a month on the Institute’s campus as part of the Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI). More than three decades later, her daughter Jamie followed in her footsteps as an ISSI participant. Here, mother and daughter share the Weizmann experiences that fueled their scientific curiosity—and sparked their deep love of the Institute and of Israel.

Shortly after I had a double mastectomy, I got lymphedema in my arms. I was devastated. I knew going in what it was, and I was terrified.
Put very simply, the lymphatic system provides cells with nutrients and acts as a means of waste removal. We need it to survive. However, the same system will also carry cancer cells to other parts of the body, which is called metastasis. Cancer cells get trapped in lymph nodes and cause secondary tumors, which is why surgeons will err on the side of caution to keep the cancer from coming back. Curing cancer is their focus after all.

Dr. Michael Yartsev runs the NeuroBat Lab at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. With the support of an ISEF doctoral fellowship, he completed his PhD in 2012 at the Weizmann Institute, studying under the guidance of Prof. Nachum Ulanovsky.
Dr. Michael Yartsev
Dr. Yartsev is fascinated with the neurobiological mechanism by which bats acquire their vocalizations, targeting a core process – shared with humans – called “vocal learning.” ISEF supported Dr. Yartsev throughout his higher education, from his BSc and MSc at Ben-Gurion University to his PhD at Weizmann to his postdoctoral research at the Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University, for which he received an ISEF International Fellowship. The ISEF scholarships helped Dr. Yartsev find his calling. “My time at the Weizmann Institute was transformative to my career,” he says, “as it exposed me to the extraordinary model system: the bat.”

On March 21, the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Dr. Ulyana Shimanovich received the 11th Annual Gruber Award for Scientific Excellence. Established by philanthropist Patricia Gruber and her late husband Peter Gruber through their Gruber Foundation, the prestigious award provides valuable affirmation and support for talented young scientists just beginning their careers.
Patricia’s forward-looking approach to improving the human condition is both principled and pragmatic: she funds the fellowships, scholarships, awards, and other initiatives that actually help people advance.
