The race to find a cure for AIDS, one of Earth’s most pressing epidemics for more than three decades now, is often more of a chaotic relay. Thousands of international scientists must constantly revise their own projects to keep up with findings from across all scientific disciplines — always collaborating toward a common good, yet also trying to stay one step ahead of the competition.

Dr. Michal Rivlin
Seven years after the launch of the donor-backed National Postdoctoral Program for Advancing Women in Science, the program, established and operated by the Weizmann Institute of Science, is evidencing major signs of success in its aim to nurture the careers of Israeli women scientists and thereby advance academic science overall in Israel. More than 80 percent of the women who participated in the program have attained faculty positions in Israeli academia: 22 out of the 27 women who completed their postdoctoral studies abroad. Of the remainder, two have accepted faculty appointments abroad and two are working in the Israeli high-tech industry.

In the age of convenience, on-demand car services such as Uber and Lyft have become so popular that city dwellers across America wonder how they survived without them. It’s easy to forget that just a few years ago, using a smartphone app to hail a ride was a novel idea. And one of the first to recognize its potential was Weizmann Institute alumnus Dr. Oren Shoval.
Shoval is a co-founder of Via, a New York City-based startup that is taking the transportation space by storm. Since its inception in 2012, the company has provided more than seven million rides and raised an impressive $137 million from investors. What makes Via stand out from its competition? Rather than providing door-to-door rides, the service offers ride shares for passengers traveling in the same direction and drops them off within a couple blocks of their destination. In this way, the company keeps the number of vehicles to a minimum—and guarantees low flat fares. For New Yorkers, it means being able to travel from lower Manhattan to Harlem for $5, “the price of a latte,” as Via’s website points out.

NEW YORK—Three Ethiopian teens, part of the Jewish Agency's Sparks of Science program, were in Turkey last week at an international space camp run in partnership with NASA.
The teens were sent at the initiative of the Jewish Agency and the Weizmann Institute and are part of an Israeli delegation of high school students.
The Jewish Agency's Sparks of Science program provides academic enrichment for Ethiopian high school students with classes in science, technology, math, and English at Israel's top academic institutions, including the renowned Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot; classes are taught by Weizmann faculty and tutoring sessions by students.

Apr 16, 2019... The Weizmann Institute brings together scientists from a variety of disciplines to tackle cancer head-on. In the fourth episode of Weizmann in Focus, CEO Dave Doneson highlights a recent headline-making breakthrough from the labs of Profs. Ido Amit and Amos Tanay. Working with hospitals across Israel, the scientists identified a very small number of malignant cells in what is considered a pre-malignant stage of multiple myeloma—the second-most common type of blood cancer. Their discovery holds the promise of earlier, more precise treatment.

Oct 04, 2018... Each year since 1969, the Dr. Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) has welcomed about 80 talented high school graduates from around the world to spend a month on the Weizmann Institute campus. Students conduct research alongside renowned Weizmann scientists, experience life in Israel, and form close bonds with one another. Here, participants discuss how the program has nurtured their passion for science. Alumna Prof. Yardena Samuels credits ISSI with solidifying her desire to become a scientist and to establish her own lab at the Weizmann Institute.
