Feb 02, 2017... Dr. Michael Yartsev runs the NeuroBat Lab at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. With the support of an ISEF doctoral fellowship, he completed his PhD in 2012 at the Weizmann Institute, studying under the guidance of Prof. Nachum Ulanovsky.
Dr. Michael Yartsev
Dr. Yartsev is fascinated with the neurobiological mechanism by which bats acquire their vocalizations, targeting a core process – shared with humans – called “vocal learning.” ISEF supported Dr. Yartsev throughout his higher education, from his BSc and MSc at Ben-Gurion University to his PhD at Weizmann to his postdoctoral research at the Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University, for which he received an ISEF International Fellowship. The ISEF scholarships helped Dr. Yartsev find his calling. “My time at the Weizmann Institute was transformative to my career,” he says, “as it exposed me to the extraordinary model system: the bat.”

REHOVOT, ISRAEL—December 1, 2019—The 11th president of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Prof. Alon Chen, took office on December 1, joined by four new vice presidents.
“The Weizmann Institute is a world-leading research institution that generates transformative knowledge and educates the scientists of tomorrow,” said Prof. Chen in his recent speech before the International Board at its annual meeting. “Our alumni embark on careers in high-tech and biotech and in academia, providing the foundations of Israel’s booming economy, just as Chaim Weizmann envisioned. As we reach the milestone of 70 years since the establishment of the Weizmann Institute, I believe it’s safe to say that we have indeed lived up to Chaim Weizmann’s expectations. Perhaps we have even exceeded them.” The full text of Prof. Alon’s speech can be found here.

The Importance of Basic Research
The Importance of Basic Research

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/in-the-news/the-importance-of-basic-research/

Mar 07, 2013... This is science’s newest Golden Age. Young people today are inspired by generational heroes like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg that were filled in the relative recent past by the likes of Michael Jordan and Mick Jagger. The fact that today’s students can dream of emulating role models who achieved their status using their minds and curiosity is a good thing.
However, there is one significant drawback. The rock star status of today’s scientific celebrities encourages aspiring scientists to focus on the retail possibilities that can result in fast fame and wealth. While understandable, this unwittingly neglects a crucial part of the scientific equation — basic research.

Apr 22, 2013... There was some heavy duty mingling between super scientists and mere mortals at the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Gala held at The Pierre on April 17. Shmoozers included Sam Waksal, Edith Everett and Sir James Wolfensohn. Sinuous Israeli singer Einat Sarouf launched the evening with her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and Hatikvah.
Honored were Sara and Professor Michael Sela, a former president of the Weizmann Institute (1975-1985). Currently the incumbent of the W. Garfield Weston Professorial Chair of Immunology, Prof. Sela — still active in the lab though in his 80s — joshed: “I’ve always said that my motto was work hard and play hard. But I’ve never had enough time to play. So it’s mainly work, but such a pleasant, satisfactory work.”

Jun 13, 2014... ""One of the most important things in my life,"" says Larry Blumberg, reflecting on the American Committee on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, has been his involvement with the Weizmann Institute of Science. A former chairman of the American Committee, he admits: ""I've become a science junkie! I go to as many science lectures as I can.""
