Oct 31, 2019... The ocean is one of the largest and most mysterious ecosystems on Earth. In the tenth episode of Weizmann in Focus, Dave Doneson describes the fascinating research of Weizmann Profs. Ilan Koren and Assaf Vardi who set sail aboard the Tara schooner to unlock some of these mysteries. They were among a select group of scientists who traveled thousands of kilometers across all the world’s oceans to advance research and increase environmental awareness. The research conducted on board the schooner yielded hundreds of scientific papers as well as a better understanding of the ocean ecosystem and how it impacts the entire planet.
Sep 22, 2015... September is both Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S., prostate cancer is the most common cancer (after skin cancer) in men: about 1 in 7 will be diagnosed during his lifetime. However, as the American Cancer Society points out, prostate cancer is now quite treatable, and “most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it.” But there is still progress to be made: for example, current treatments can have undesirable side effects, such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. The situation with ovarian cancer is rather reversed. It is far less common – a woman’s risk of being diagnosed is about 1 in 75 – but has much lower survival rates, largely because it is difficult to detect until it has spread. The American Cancer Society reports that only 15% of ovarian cancers are found and treated at the crucial early stages. Development of a reliable way to diagnose ovarian cancer is vital, as is a greater understanding of its tendency to aggressively metastasize and resist treatment. Fortunately, multiple research groups at the Weizmann Institute of Science are investigating prostate and ovarian cancers. Here are just some of their advances:

Weizmann Institute
A longtime donor to the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel wanted to do more. He had his sights set on endowing a chair that goes to new hires at the institute as they set up labs and assemble research teams. But he couldn’t afford the $750,000 price tag, except through a bequest.
That didn’t stop fundraisers at the New York-based American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science. They worked out a plan with the donor to put his name on a chair sooner rather than later. The donor would start by giving $37,500 each year, roughly equal to what the chair would draw annually from a $750,000 endowment. His estate would pay off the full endowment when he died.
