REHOVOT, ISRAEL—July 29, 2020—The Weizmann Institute of Science and Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Clalit Health Services signed a Memorandum of Understanding today on a collaborative biomedical research initiative. The “Schneider-Weizmann Center for Research on Child and Adolescent Health” will be jointly established by the two entities. The anticipated fields of research include oncology, neurology, psychiatry, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nutrition, and metabolism. Other fields of research may be agreed upon in the future.

Jan 19, 2021... Prof. Maya Schuldiner of Weizmann’s Department of Molecular Genetics uses analogies to clarify the nature of cells. These tiny living beings are highly organized communities, and while there are different types – blood, skin, etc. – they have basically the same elements. One of these is the peroxisome, an organelle whose malfunction or absence can lead to devastating diseases in children.
Because cells are so similar, Prof. Schuldiner’s lab is able to use common Baker’s yeast as a stand in for the human cell to study peroxisomes. She hopes to someday offer treatment – even a cure – for the unique children suffering from peroxisomal diseases.

Mar 17, 2021... Food insecurity – lack of consistent access to sufficient, nutritious food – was a major public-health concern before the pandemic. Climate change’s extended droughts, destructive fires and storms, and rising waters are wiping out resources in many areas, notably India and Africa. Poverty is another contributing factor, particularly in cities with “food deserts” where it is hard to find fresh fruit and vegetables and other healthy options. (Interestingly, the World Bank reports that “children who are properly nourished during the first 1,000 days of their lives are 33% more likely to escape poverty as adults.”)

Jul 14, 2022... The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science (ACWIS) has announced major gifts from four Detroit-area philanthropists in support of programs and initiatives at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.
The gifts will establish or bolster contributor-named centers and institutes that extend the capacity of Weizmann’s scientific research initiatives in global health, medicine, and science education. No gift amounts were disclosed.

May 31, 2015... Some research changes lives; some research makes lives. Such is the case for the Kaman family of Toronto, who had an emotional meeting with the scientist and clinician whose fertility research led to a much-desired pregnancy - and the birth of their daughter Hannah in 2008.
In the late 1990s, Prof. Nava Dekel of the Department of Biological Regulation and clinicians at Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot made a serendipitous discovery that inflicting a slight injury to the lining of the uterus before women undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) dramatically increases the chances of a successful pregnancy. Since then, Prof. Dekel’s studies at the Weizmann Institute unveiled the mechanism of this beneficiary intervention and hundreds of fertility clinics worldwide have changed their IVF protocol accordingly. The result has been higher pregnancy success rates - and lots of babies who might otherwise not have been born.
