Dec 11, 2011... The holiday season may be full of joy, but it is also full of temptation, with abundant food and drink at seemingly every turn, and even full of stress, as family, economic, and other tensions can arise. And at a time when health officials around the world are increasingly concerned about the obesity epidemic and its related conditions, such as diabetes, there is particular reason to be aware of overeating, stress, coping mechanisms, and related issues.

HiGrade app lets consumers check the potency of any THC cannabis strain with a smartphone. Photo: courtesy
Will this bud get you buzzed, relieve your pain, or leave you dazed and confused?
The HiGrade cannabis analytics app uses your smartphone camera and machine learning algorithms to reveal your dry cannabis flowers’ level of THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis.
The app can be used, where legal, by medical cannabis users to get a more accurate dose, or by recreational users to be more mindful about what they’re smoking.

There are lots of reasons to avoid processed foods. They’re often packed with sugar, fat and salt, and they tend to lack certain nutrients critical to health, like fiber. And now, new research suggests that some of the additives that extend the shelf life and improve the texture of these foods may have unintended side effects — not on our bodies directly, but on the human microbiome, the trillions of bacteria living in our guts. These substances may selectively feed the more dangerous members of our microbial communities, causing illness and even death.

The Spring Citadel was excavated in the City of David National Park by dozens of researchers led by Professor Ronny Reich of the University of Haifa and Eli Shukrun of the Israel Antiquities Authority and dated to 3,800 years ago. (City of David)
A new Weizmann Institute study has discovered radiocarbon-dating evidence of the First Temple period under a tower in Jerusalem’s City of David that was previously dated to the Canaanite period. The findings, based on soil samples taken from under a seven-meter thick walled tower, shave nearly a thousand years from previous archaeological dating of the structure, which placed it c. 1700 BCE — and contradict a presumed biblical linkage to the site.

We all read — and I've written — a lot about motivating people. But we usually try to learn from ourselves, and from other businesses. That narrow perspective can be limiting. So recently I've been interested in how other sectors drive high performance.
In science, there are rarely any big financial rewards. Competition is fierce, with more and more post-graduates seeking limited positions and funding. Anybody who would even be considered to do scientific research has to be smart, well-educated, and dedicated, so the bar is set very high. To cap it all off, the failure rate is enormous; many Ph.D students fail to get academic positions and those who do often labor for decades without much in the way of applause or recognition. Scientists also rarely enjoy lavish perks of corporate life: business class travel, swanky hotels, client dinners. The standard scientific conference is long on Post-It notes and short on glitz.

Some months ago, I participated in a two-week experiment that involved using a smartphone app to track every morsel of food I ate, every beverage I drank and every medication I took, as well as how much I slept and exercised. I wore a sensor that monitored my blood-glucose levels, and I sent in a sample of my stool for an assessment of my gut microbiome. All of my data, amassed with similar input from more than a thousand other people, was analyzed by artificial intelligence to create a personalized diet algorithm. The point was to find out what kind of food I should be eating to live a longer and healthier life.
