Jan 28, 2009... Even when the results of the basic research at the Weizmann Institute are translated directly to medical application, it may take years to reach patients. But, once in a while, a finding can change lives almost immediately.
In 2006, Prof. Nava Dekel of the Institute’s Biological Regulation Department, together with doctors in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) unit of the Kaplan Medical Center, made the surprising discovery that performing a uterine biopsy — causing a slight injury to the lining of the uterus just before a woman undergoes IVF doubles the chances of a successful pregnancy. Although the mechanism was not completely clear, Dekel and her team assumed that the injury provokes a response in the uterus that makes it more receptive to the embryo’s implantation.

Nov 24, 2015... Capturing a single photon from a pulse of light: Devices based on the Weizmann Institute model may be the backbone of future quantum communications systems
At the Weizmann Institute of Science, researchers have managed to “pluck” a single photon – one particle of light – out of a pulse of light. The findings of this research, which appeared November 24 in Nature Photonics, bear both fundamental and practical significance: Light is the workhorse of today’s communication systems, and single photons are likely to be the backbone of future quantum communication systems. In addition, say the scientists, the apparatus they have devised will spur further research into the fundamental particle nature of light.

May 15, 2014... TEDx Weizmann Institute, a conference on excellence in science and science education, will be held on May 20 at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The Institute has been working for the past 50 years to advance science education in Israel. The conference will be led by the Davidson Institute of Science Education, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute, together with scientists and staff of the Weizmann Institute and with the support of the Trump Foundation, which promotes the advancement of science and math education.

Jan 27, 2011... Antioxidants touted as an anti-aging remedy and added to food and cosmetics may hinder ovulation, Israeli scientists have discovered.
Consumers have been told for years that antioxidants added to food, drink and facial cosmetics are a natural way to combat cell damage and slow down the aging process.
But according to a study by Prof. Nava Dekel of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, these additives could be causing female fertility problems.

When Prof. Nava Dekel of the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Department of Biological Regulation began studying a protein that plays a role in implanting fertilized eggs in the uterus, she had no idea it would lead to a discovery that is now helping couples struggling with infertility to have children.
For many years, Prof. Dekel focused her investigations on the mechanisms responsible for ovum (egg) development and embryo implantation. “But in science,” she says, “you can never decide ‘this is what I’m going to study for the rest of my life.’ You follow a path, and somewhere along the way you say, ‘Wow – there’s something interesting!’”

REHOVOT, ISRAEL—February 23, 2012—In recent years, a number of controversial claims have been made about the female mammal's egg supply, including that it is renewed over her adult lifetime (as opposed to the conventional understanding that she is born with all of her eggs) and that the source of these eggs is stem cells that originate in the bone marrow. Now, researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science have disproved one of those claims and pointed in new directions toward resolving the other. Their findings, based on an original method for reconstructing lineage trees for cells, were published online February 23 in PLoS Genetics.

Two leading biologists at Rehovot’s Weizmann Institute of Science have strongly objected to an offer by Facebook and Apple to the US companies’ female employees to finance the freezing of their ova so they can delay motherhood, as a pathway for improving women’s access to fulfilling careers.
The position paper was issued on Monday by Prof. Michal Neeman, dean of the biology faculty and director of the Clore Center for Biological Physics, and Prof. Nava Dekel of the developmental biology department. Their ire was triggered by the companies’ announcement of October 14.
