At 29, Eran Hodis has achieved what many scientists dream of accomplishing in a lifetime: He discovered two of the most common genetic mutations in all of cancer. His work has global implications and could, in the future, lead to more effective cancer therapies. This year, in recognition of his scientific achievements, Hodis was named to Forbes’s prestigious “30 under 30” list.
“Without a doubt, my Weizmann training made that possible,” said Hodis, who earned his master’s in bioinformatics at Weizmann’s Feinberg Graduate School.

Manot Cave cranium
A partial human skull unearthed in 2008 in northern Israel may hold some clues as to when and where humans and Neanderthals might have interbred. The key to addressing this, as well as other important issues, is precisely determining the age of the skull. A combination of dating methods, one of them performed by Dr. Elisabetta Boaretto, head of the Weizmann Institute’s D-REAMS (DANGOOR Research Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) laboratory, has made it possible to define the period of time that the cave was occupied and, thus, the skull’s age. The combined dating provides evidence that Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis could have lived side by side in the area.

The Weizmann Institute of Science: We recruit scientists who are among the best in the world and let them follow their curiosity
REHOVOT, ISRAEL—August 9, 2017—The Nature Index of Innovation, published August 9, 2017, places the Weizmann Institute of Science in sixth place in an international ranking of the world’s top 200 research institutions. To determine placements, the Nature Index – affiliated with renowned scientific journal Nature – examined how research articles are cited in third-party patents, then ranked the institutions according to the impact produced by their academic research.
Apr 02, 2015... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—April 2, 2015—An analysis of the average success rates for all European Research Council (ERC) grants awarded during the 7th Framework Programme (FP7), 2007 – 2013, gave the Weizmann Institute of Science the top score: it has had 35% of its ERC grant proposals approved, while in comparison, the Israeli average is 18%, and the success rate of all ERC proposals is around 10%. And in absolute numbers of grants – a metric that puts the Institute in direct competition with much larger institutions – the Weizmann Institute was number six, with a total of 82 grants worth nearly €150 million (more than $165 million).

LOS ANGELES (March 28, 2019) —XPRIZE, the global leader in designing and operating world-changing incentive competitions, announces that it will offer a $1 million Moonshot Award in recognition of an XPRIZE team demonstrating the achievement of a “moonshot” technological feat outside the parameters or timeframe of an XPRIZE competition.
The Award is inspired by SpaceIL, a former Google Lunar XPRIZE team, whose mission to become the first private, non-government entity to land on the surface of the Moon is underway, with an anticipated landing on April 11, 2019. A successful lunar landing will result in SpaceIL receiving the inaugural Moonshot Award from XPRIZE.

The Israeli math team.
The team that represented Israel at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Santa Marta, Colombia, has won six medals – one gold, three silver, and two bronze. The Israeli team was ranked 13th among 97 participating countries.
Team members are “graduates” of national Olympiads – the Joseph Gillis National Math Olympiad for high school and the Zuta Math Olympiad for junior high school students – held at the Davidson Institute of Science Education, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science. The team took part in a two-week training camp in early June, as well as training sessions held over the three months that preceded the competition. They were coached by Lev Radzivilovsky, together with Prof. Dmitry Novikov of the Weizmann Institute’s Department of Mathematics.
