"Trained" bacteria can lead to better biofuels
"Trained" bacteria can lead to better biofuels

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/in-the-news/trained-bacteria-can-lead-to-better-biofuels/

Jun 05, 2009... Bacteria are not dumb. Israeli researchers have proven that these pathogens can anticipate a future event and prepare for it. The discovery - just published in the prestigious journal Nature - is not merely a curiosity. The scientists believe that if bacteria gain the genetic ability to prepare themselves for the next step in a process, the conditioned response could be used for fermenting plant materials and producing more efficient biofuels.

Advancing Medicine: From Proteins to Personalized Treatments
Advancing Medicine: From Proteins to Personalized Treatments

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/feature-stories/advancing-medicine-from-proteins-to-personalized-treatments/

Jul 29, 2010... In the future, the practice and precision of medicine may be very different from what they are today. Prof. Uri Alon of the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science foresees a future in which medicine is predictive, personalized, accurate, and rational. In fact, he has already begun to set the groundwork for this transformation by identifying common recurring patterns in the way proteins interact, and developing a novel method for essentially spying on living cells as they undergo chemotherapy.

Feb 10, 2014... FLICKR. MARTIN PETTITT
Scientists know that circadian rhythms affect metabolism, but many of the ways in which the timing of eating can influence health are still unknown. Now, researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and the Sanford-Burnam Medical Resarch Institute in Florida have shown in mice that the timing of meals affects the levels of triglycerides in the liver. The work was published last week (February 5) in Cell Metabolism.

How Jetlag Disrupts the Ticks of Your Microbial Clock

Oct 22, 2014... The Persistence of Memory, by Salvador Dali.
Your genome is the same right now as it was yesterday, last week, last year, or the day you were born. But your microbiomes – the combined genes of all the trillions of microbes that share your body – have shifted since the sun came up this morning. And they will change again before the next sunrise.
Christoph Thaiss from the Weizmann Institute of Science has discovered that the communities of microbes in out guts vary on a daily cycle. Some species rise to the fore during daylight hours and recede into the background at night, while others show the opposite pattern.

February is American Heart Month
February is American Heart Month

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/feature-stories/february-is-american-heart-month/

Feb 09, 2016... Our hearts mean many things – love, strength, loyalty. But even if we set aside everything they represent and consider hearts from a purely biological perspective, they are still awesome. These four-chambered, fist-sized, muscular powerhouses pump up to 2,000 gallons of blood a day! However, while they never tire and are astonishingly resilient, they are susceptible to a number of illnesses, which can be caused by a number of things: congenital issues, genetics, obesity, diabetes, inactivity, and more. In fact, heart disease is the leading cause of death for female, male, black, white, and Latino Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and is responsible for one in every four deaths in the U.S.

Feb 25, 2020... It’s American Heart Month. In the U.S., heart disease is responsible for one out of every four deaths each year. In the latest episode of Weizmann in Focus, Dave Doneson sheds light on a Weizmann breakthrough that could help change this staggering statistic. Prof. Eldad Tzahor discovered a molecule in newborn hearts that appears to unlock the cardiac renewal process following injury.
Find out how this discovery could lead to innovative therapies that save lives. Please share this video with friends via email or social media.

What the Weizmann Institute is Doing About Heart Disease
What the Weizmann Institute is Doing About Heart Disease

https://www.weizmann-usa.org/news-media/feature-stories/what-the-weizmann-institute-is-doing-about-heart-disease/

Feb 01, 2013... Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control’s straightforward statement of that fact belies the complex truth: heart problems are both common and varied, affect people of all ages, and strike equally across gender and economic borders. And according to the American Heart Association, more than 80 million Americans have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure. Factors such as obesity, diabetes, and inactivity greatly contribute to heart and cardiovascular disease, although congenital and genetic issues also come into play.

Tumors Might Grow Faster at Night
Tumors Might Grow Faster at Night

Oct 06, 2014... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—October 6, 2014—They emerge at night, while we sleep unaware, growing and spreading out as quickly as they can. And they are deadly. In a surprise finding that was recently published in Nature Communications, Weizmann Institute of Science researchers showed that nighttime is the right time for cancer to grow and spread in the body. Their findings suggest that administering certain treatments in time with the body’s day-night cycle could boost their efficiency.
