Jan 07, 2016... When you have a fever, your nose is stuffed and your headache is spreading to your toes, your body is telling you to stay home in bed. Feeling sick is an evolutionary adaptation, according to a hypothesis put forward by Prof. Guy Shakhar of the Weizmann Institute of Science’s Department of Immunology and Dr. Keren Shakhar of the Psychology Department of the College of Management Academic Studies, in a recent paper published in PLoS Biology.

For most of his life, Joshua Meier has been the textbook definition of a whiz kid. At four, he received his first computer game – a gift that fascinated him until he realized that the experience it created was “fundamentally limited.” Eager to push beyond those limitations, he opened his first email account when he was five and began programming at the age of eight.
His interests soon expanded to biology. By the time he was a high school junior in Teaneck, New Jersey, he was the head of a biotechnology company, Provita Pharmaceuticals, and had already gained recognition from Google for his stem cell research.
Oct 22, 2015... Interdisciplinary collaboration is the hallmark of the Weizmann Institute. This video, which premiered at the 2015 Midwest Region Gala Dinner, highlights some of the scientists who crossed the borders of their fields to work together – and their resulting success. New collaborative programs, such as in personalized medicine, are also presented.

The Israeli math team.
The team that represented Israel at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Santa Marta, Colombia, has won six medals – one gold, three silver, and two bronze. The Israeli team was ranked 13th among 97 participating countries.
Team members are “graduates” of national Olympiads – the Joseph Gillis National Math Olympiad for high school and the Zuta Math Olympiad for junior high school students – held at the Davidson Institute of Science Education, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science. The team took part in a two-week training camp in early June, as well as training sessions held over the three months that preceded the competition. They were coached by Lev Radzivilovsky, together with Prof. Dmitry Novikov of the Weizmann Institute’s Department of Mathematics.

The global head-lice epidemic is a real head-scratcher.
In the United States alone, up to 12 million children get infested with head lice each year. Across the world, the head-lice treatment market has reached $1.8 billion worth of special shampoos, conditioners and combs promising to vanquish the little wingless parasites.

Men won most of the Nobel Prizes in the 20th century; with new awards, outstanding women now have a chance to catch up.
A young Israeli scientist from the Weizmann Institute of Science who is studying the effect of consciousness on memory in people with neurological disease has become a laureate of the UNESCO L'Oreal Foundation in Paris, along with 14 other women from around the world.
Dr. Hagar Gelbard-Sagiv, 32, who went to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) with her husband and children a year ago to continue her research, believes that her work could lead to advances in chronic disease.

After playing a sad movie scene for a group of women, researchers collected their tears and placed the unidentified fluid under men's noses. The result was a reduced sexual arousal and testosterone levels.
The sight of someone in tears might make you feel concerned. But the smell of tears, researchers say, has a different effect.
"You might think—we did—that [smelling] tears might create empathy," says Noam Sobel, a neurobiologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. He and his colleagues had women watch a sad movie scene, collected their tears and placed samples of the unidentified fluid under men's noses. The tears did not elicit empathy in a standard lab test, but they did reduce the men's sexual arousal and testosterone levels. Apparently the tears sent a message that romance was off the table.

“As a country we don’t fully realize how dangerous this threat is,” says Dr. Ariel Heimann, former director-general of the Davidson Institute of Science Education (the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute), “Everyone keeps talking about the Iranian threat, but it’s not so certain a bomb will ever reach us. What is certain, however, is that without Israeli science, we have no Israeli future.”

Should we drink diet soda or not? The latest study doesn't really clear things up.
The debate over whether diet sodas are good, bad or just OK for us never seems to end.
Some research suggests zero-calorie drinks can help people cut calories and fend off weight gain.
But in recent years, the idea that artificial sweeteners may trick the brain and lead to "metabolic derangements," as one researcher has theorized, has gained traction, too.

Sep 22, 2009... A whimsical look at Weizmann ""news"" shows how Institute advances have also advanced the state of Israel. From creating Israel's first computer to establishing a technology transfer company, particle accelerators, alternative energy, and frontline MS drugs, the Institute is part and parcel of the land of milk and honey – and science.
