NEW YORK, NY—September 17, 2009—Ellen Merlo of New York has been appointed Chair of the New York Region's Executive Committee of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science. Ms. Merlo has been a longtime supporter and advocate of the Weizmann Institute of Science–one of the world's top-ranking multidisciplinary research institutions, located in Rehovot, Israel.
As part of her philanthropic leadership appointment, Ms. Merlo will direct efforts to raise awareness and expand the reach of the Weizmann Institute of Science, while also championing the Institute's crucial work to address the biggest challenges facing humanity. She will aim to further involve current New York supporters and recruit new supporters. Ms. Merlo will succeed Bruce Pollack, who served as Chair of the New York Region's Executive Committee for four years.

Dear Members of the Weizmann Institute Family,
When friends of the Weizmann Institute—and of Israel—ask me for some good news from our region, I have no difficulty in responding. The irrepressible energy and boundless ingenuity of Israeli inventors and entrepreneurs are there for all to see, but to none are they more evident than to those of us immersed in science and research.
Israel is home today to about 500 communications technology companies, 200 in medical instrumentation, 100 in fabless circuit design plus a number of circuit production giants, and 50 in digital printing and imaging. It has become a veritable superpower in data security, with some major companies in the field and about 80 start-ups. There are hundreds of companies developing an impressive range of programming applications—for trading in foreign currency options, for Internet applications, and a great deal more. In my own field of plant science, the long tradition of Israeli innovation is being carried forward by a growing number of biotechnology companies devoted to advanced crop improvement and the production of plant-derived products. In drug design and development, Teva Pharmaceuticals leads as a major player in the world arena and is Israel's largest and most successful commercial company ever. All this, and more, in a country of less than 6 million people!

As we take a moment to reflect on 2018, one thing is clear: the world needs science now more than ever. The past year was a time of flux, which makes us all the more grateful for Weizmann’s unchanging mission of “science for the benefit of humanity.” Scientific progress holds the promise of a better world – and here are just some of the breakthroughs from 2018 that inspire hope:
Prof. Ruth Arnon, renowned co-developer of Copaxone®, one of the world’s leading multiple sclerosis drugs, has developed a universal flu vaccine. The vaccine, which entered Phase III clinical trials in 2018, could protect people against all strains of the virus, for many years, in a single shot.
Mar 07, 2017... On February 28, 2017, American Committee donors of all giving levels were invited to join a special conference call with CEO Marshall S. Levin. More than 100 donors from across the country participated. Mr. Levin spoke on the topic of “Science at the Leading Edge: Latest Breakthroughs from the Weizmann Institute of Science.” He opened with an overview of the Weizmann Institute and its reputation as a relatively small institution with “an outsized impact” on the world. He then discussed the Institute’s game-changing research on the aging brain, as well as the work of its Nancy and Stephen Grand Israel National Center for Personalized Medicine. Through these and other initiatives, the Institute seeks to improve the quality of life of every person on the planet.

NEW YORK, N.Y.—August 1, 2018—The Board of Directors of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science has unanimously elected David Doneson to be the organization’s next CEO, effective September 4, 2018. Mr. Doneson will succeed Marshall S. Levin, who has served as CEO since 2008.
In making the announcement, Ellen Merlo, National Chair of the American Committee, said, “Dave Doneson is a dynamic leader with a notable record of accomplishments in the field of financial resource development, specifically for academic and research institutions. He is passionate about the Weizmann Institute’s mission of science for the benefit of humanity. His outstanding professional talents and collaborative approach to management make him uniquely suited and the ideal choice to lead the American Committee.”

One day, you finally figure it out. It might happen out of nowhere or something might have caused it to happen.
I wouldn’t say that I’ve figured it all out, but I have definitely figured out a step or two of it.
A few summers ago, my friend asked me to go to an “um, I think it has something to do with farming in Colorado” overnight camp. Of course I said yes, even though I didn’t really know what I was going to be doing at said camp.
