Thirty-two-year-old Avital Dery, a doctoral student in physics at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, was selected at the end of last week to represent Israel in the British Council’s prestigious international FameLab competition at the Cheltenham Science Festival next month.
She was selected from among five contestants by giving an excellent three-minute lecture in her scientific field. Dery is investigating elementary particles. She also sings and performs classical music throughout the country.

(l-r) Profs. Ilan Koren, Yoav Schechner, and Klaus Schilling are inventing a new way of imaging clouds
REHOVOT, ISRAEL—December 17, 2018—Ten satellites, each around the size of a shoebox, are slated in a few years to enter orbit and begin filling in some gaping holes in our understanding of clouds and their role in climate. Inspired by medical CT (computed tomography), which observes and maps patients’ interiors, the designers are creating a system that will reveal detailed images of clouds’ external and internal 3D structures and properties. By probing small cloud fields that are generally missed by today’s remote-sensing technologies, the mission may resolve some major uncertainties that limit current atmospheric modelling and climate prediction.

Jun 19, 2019... REHOVOT, ISRAEL—June 19, 2019—“Size is not everything,” proclaims a Nature press release today. “Some smaller institutes are punching above their weight.” This statement arises from a new ranking conducted within the framework of the Nature Index 2019 – a normalized ranking that adds a new perspective to the relative contributions of each institute, and has placed the Weizmann Institute of Science as number two, globally.

Though they work in different fields, four South Florida women recently honored as Women of Vision by the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science have one thing in common — they're making a big difference in the community.
"We seek out honorees who have really given back or helped the community, either with philanthropic ways or through the time and effort they've put into other charities or organizations that benefit others," said Richard Enslein, executive director of the institute's South Florida region.

On April 2, Patricia Gruber presented the 13th annual Gruber Award for Scientific Excellence to the Weizmann Institute’s Dr. Sivan Refaely-Abramson. Established by Patricia and her late husband, Peter, through their Gruber Foundation, the three-year award recognizes brilliant early-career Weizmann scientists.
New Weizmann faculty members require significant support to establish their labs and launch their careers. By empowering these “bright lights,” as Patricia calls them, the Grubers understood that they were making a worthy investment in the future of science.

Jan 02, 2013... Two years ago, at a press conference that drew wide attention, scientists described a newfound microbe in California’s Mono Lake that flouted life’s basic instruction manual. They claimed that the bacterium, GFAJ-1, survived not on phosphate (essential to all known organisms) but on arsenate, a toxic arsenic compound. NASA hailed the work as a step forward in the search for alien life. But now other researchers have discredited the discovery.

October 7, 2009—The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science congratulates Prof. Ada Yonath on receiving the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and is proud of her scientific achievements. We are delighted that the Nobel Committee for Chemistry has recognized the significance of Prof. Yonath's scientific research and awarded her this important prize.
Prof. Yonath's research is driven by curiosity and ambition to better understand the world and our place within it. This research aims high: to understand one of the most complicated "machines" of the biological system.
