Jan 18, 2017... The prostate cancer therapy Tookad® is the product of a decades-long cross-disciplinary partnership between a plant scientist, Prof. Avigdor Scherz, and a biochemist, Prof. Yoram Salomon. The chlorophyll-based method destroys the tumor but not the healthy tissue nearby – and without the quality-of-life impacts of other prostate cancer treatments. This past year, Mexico approved Tookad® for treatment of early stage prostate cancer. Europe and Israel are nearing approval, and late-stage clinical trials are ongoing at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Bruce Lasker of Pfizer and Dr. Berta Strulovici, head of the G-INCPM, on the Weizmann campus
REHOVOT, ISRAEL—June 6, 2016—The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and Yeda Research and Development Co., Ltd., its commercial arm, announced this week that they have entered a multi-year arrangement with Pfizer Inc. The arrangement will entail collaboration at the newly established National Drug Discovery Institute (DDI) in the Nancy and Stephen Grand Israel National Center for Personalized Medicine (G-INCPM), which is part of the Weizmann Institute and located on its campus. Pfizer will be supporting the G-INCPM by placing a Pfizer medicinal chemist (rotating on a yearly basis) at the Institute to assist with advancing target selection and high-throughput screening, as well as leading development campaigns for programs that enter the DDI. If projects of mutual interest – those that hold promise in addressing unmet medical needs – are identified, Pfizer and Yeda will evaluate the potential for research and development agreements.

This year's top institutions give researchers more than a place to do great science. They offer the opportunity to nurture, and be nurtured in return.
Starting a new job isn’t easy, even if you are Ron Weiss, an innovator in the emerging field of synthetic biology. When Weiss arrived at Princeton University seven years ago, straight from completing his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the young bioengineer had never been a principal investigator, much less set up a lab from scratch. Fortunately, as soon as Weiss arrived at Princeton, ranked No. 2 on this year’s Best Places to Work in Academia survey, Jim Sturm, a senior electrical engineer, was appointed as his “big brother” by the department chair. “I could turn to him for questions about grants, managing the lab, trying to think about research directions,” says Weiss, “It was wonderful.”

Nov 26, 2019... Indian researchers benefit from not just the theoretical background that an Israel education provides, but also the world-class infrastructure that is an intrinsic part of the system. This, says Avraham Yaron, professor at the Department of Biomolecular Sciences, Weizmann Institute of Science, “is largely because of Israel’s global reputation as a startup nation with innovation and technology at its core.”

Richard Price
The 800 guests at the Fairmont Hotel were restless when Richard Price took the stage to accept his honors from the Weizmann Institute of Science, a research university in Israel supported by numerous Chicago business executives.
The crowd already had sat through a Q&A panel of scientists talking about the Israel-based organization's work—all while the Cubs game was being broadcast from New York.

Weizmann alumnus Dr. Jeffrey Rothenberg wears many hats. Over the course of a single day, you might find him seeing patients, leading an executive hospital meeting, teaching medical students, or delivering newborns. You might also find him practicing an entirely different occupation: glassblowing.
An accomplished obstetrician-gynecologist, a celebrated professor, and a prolific artist, Dr. Rothenberg says his vocations and his avocation are integral to who he is. And while friends, family, and colleagues marvel at his ability to use both sides of his brain, he sees the two as intertwined. The arts and humanities, he believes, nurture skills such as observation, introspection, and empathy—all of which make physicians better healers.
